New Decatur School Districts

A truly mind boggling color map depicting the crazy assignment of students to elementary schools in Decatur Township for the 2010-2011 school year is now posted on the district website. [edited : the link is making my browser go crazy. I'll see when they get the map fixed on the district website and post the link again then]

Given the back flips families will be doing to get their children to school, many of whom will not be able to attend the closest school, the issue of finding new babysitters has been brought to my attention. I have been asked to allow babysitters to post their names and what school district they serve.

Given that any entry in a blog rolls down and finally off the main page, I think what might be best is for babysitters to contact me at hadenoughindy@gmail.com with their name, phone number, and what district they serve. I will then post it in a box on the right hand side of the blog. This will not be any kind of endorsement of the particular babysitters -- so do your homework and get your references.

Looking for a sitter in the new DILC area

Looks like students from Lynwood and Heartland Crossing will attend DILC Blue even though some of the Valley Mills students and West Newton students were closer to DILC??? Who and what made these decisions??? Did any Valley Mills students need to change schools next year? Was cost of transportation from Heartland Crossing to DILC considered???

Looks like the maps have been removed from the district website???

Earlier today, all of the links weren't working. When I tried to look at the whole district map, it was sideways so it wasn't super easy to read. Hopefully, they are just fixing the maps to make them eaiser to decipher.

Amazing how all of the imfo on redistricting was suddenly available after elections.

Everyone who voted for the present schoolboard which was a definite vote for present administration should be very happy.

I find it very interesting that Rosie O'brien ,who had a BIG part in boundary lines and routes Grandchildren will be able to attend Valley Mills and West Newton

No doubt this was well planned strategy for the re-election of Collins and Henson. Hope no one "forgets" this example of the board and superintendent's way of working. Exactly why people must keep putting on the pressure.

Are they moving fifth graders from their home school for just one year before they send them to the "junior high"????

Why are they spending money to put DDA and DEC at the ECC when there is "room" for them at the junior high school and senior high school??? Seems like more waste of money??

What are Rather and Candace doing next year?????????

They say they have cut about $5 mln - just a few weeks ago they need to cut more than $8mln????

Hope the folks in Alabama don't ask questions about redistricting. Everyone wants Stinson to be able to answer the questions on Friday. If those people come to Decatur the answers might be known.

Phil Webster,

Are you teaching classes next year?

Are you coaching next year?

Anonymous said...

Don't forget - the school board also meets in the summer.

Is the map still on the website? I can't seem to locate it.

I am a babysitter in the DILC gold area. please email me if interested @ nmingoy03@yahoo.com.

Guess the website for the map is "under maintenance or there is a programming error." Too bad maps were not sent home with students yesterday. Typical - probably are paying the technology director enough money.

found out this morning from the v.m gym teacher they will not have PE next year. WHAT????? are they out of their minds. this is crazy. our children must have PE it burns energy and gives the children exercise. all of our children could become obese.

Anonymous said...

Do you know the reason they gave to not have PE next year???

I have a copy of the map if anyone wants it. I am livid. They are taking all the Lynnwood kids and pulling Heartland Crossing and putting those in one school. No offense, but we built our house in HC because of West Newton. If I wanted my children to essentially go to Lynwood, I would have bought in Mars Hill. Unbelievable. Guess we will be checking into other options.

I think the new boundaries are good for the schools. Each school should have a good balance of demogrpahics, which is important. Without a balance, you will have the same mess as previous years, with Lynwood and SD trying to squeeze into VM and WN. Let's embrace the change, people. Change is good. Our kids will make new friends, and still be happy, healthy, learning children. Sure, I'm going to need to find a new sitter, etc also. It will bring us all closer together as a community. Parents will meet new people, new teacher, fresh faces....it's a good thing!

I agree with the last post. I am excited about the change. My kids are looking forward to it...because I am. They will know some of the teachers because teachers are moving too. Please keep in mind that as school systems grow, we have to change with them. We will all get through this and learn from it. I would like to say how much I appreciate the people that had to make these hard decisions, but they did a great job of keeping the schools diversified. THANKS

I'm glad you two are happy but if you look lynwood and most of SD with a few from VM will now make up the Gold so what really changed other than the kids from valley going down hill.Wiseman didn't change things at lynwood before so how will it change now?(NOT)

Anonymous said...

I agree brought our house because of the school the kids would attend we also will be looking at other options, one that will have options (pe) not just the bare min.to get by with the state no caring and sharing left here.

Please don't refer to Valley as "going down hill". Just because Valley picked up the trailer park and Horizon apartments means it's going down hill? These children you refer to as down hill, should have the same rights as the rest of the children! They do not chose their homes or their living situations. Give them a chance - they are kids! They are our future. Kids are hard enough on each other - we don't need to feed that fire by stereotyping school boundaries.

um, they had a chance at SD and LW and failed. now my VM student will be going to school with them, meaning he will be bored while the Gold teachers try to catch them uo to VM level. If more parents in SD and LW cared about their childs education then we wouldn't be here!

Hey I found this email and I think everyone should send them there thoughts on how this could effect there children. I am...

Here is more information I found:

On Tuesday, May 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. parents can come to the cafeteria at Lynwood and West Newton, and the Community Room of the Blue and Gold Academy to see the assigned attendance areas.

On Thursday, May 20 6:30-7:30 p.m. parents can come to the cafeteria at Stephen Decatur and Valley Mills Elementary Schools to see the assigned attendance areas. Please be aware that bus route information is not available at this point and will be sent later in the summer.

Information containing a district map of the new attendance areas will be sent home with all students this week. (May 12-14, 2010)

10:12 the post about down hill was not to put down any kids but like the 10:32 post stated they did have a chance at LW and SD.The standards should have been made higher at those schools and no amount of moving schools will change the learning habits of those children. It will take more teaching by both the teachers and the parnets to change that,so mean time with the teachers giving extra time to those students and the larger class size the students who may be more advance (gate etc) will not be keeping up with their learning curve and yes become bored and loose interest so as to be pulled down. There where other plans change that the school board could have used to correct the problems at LW and SD one very good plan made here on this blog but they just went with the easy change (for them) and do not want to hear anything else because they know all and see all that is best for us all just ask them. The best way to change things are always to listen to the ones that are doing the job and in this case the teachers and parnets but not here with the ALL MIGHTY OZ

I am a strong believer in diversity, whether it's skin color, or religion or income. I love the idea of having schools with a balance. But the district has no consistent approach to regular education, special education, gifted education, attendance, or behavior, much less the unique rewards and challenges of working with children from a culture of poverty. I wouldn't want my child from poverty being taught by a teacher that looks down on them. Some teachers are born loving all children. Some aren't. The district does nothing to weed out the teachers who pick on kids and nothing to reward those who bring out the best in their students. If the district planned to comprehensively evaluate a child's deficits and plan to meet their needs, if they planned to train all teachers to work with students of diverse populations, then playing 52-card pick up with the neighborhoods is fine. But as we've seen time and again, decisions are made at the last minute, with not much thought or care, and little input from the real experts (parents and teachers), no oversight, and a whole lot of politics.

Re 10:32 am.
What a crappy thing to say about elementary aged kids. I'm sure you would love to read comments like that about your own child. Really classy comment.

My daughter is 3 and I live in Valley brook. I went to Valley Mills when i was a kid and I am trilled to have my daughter go there when she is old enough. You can't judge a school but the kids that go to such as "the trailer park" so what we bought a trailer. My home is paid off in full and thats why i choose to live here. i dont have to worry about 1000 dollar property taxes. yeah i might live in a trailer thats has wheels under it-- but if i dont like whats going on in my neighboorhood i can atleast relocate my home. my daughter is very bright and i am proud of her and OUR home.

You say you went to Valley Mills so you've been in Decatur for awhile. By the time your daughter goes to school in 2 or 3 years, the boundaries will have changed 2 or 3 times so don't be so sure about her going to Valley. The administration today is so busy trying to dodge the state taking over our schools and losing their fat paychecks and benefits, that they have forgotten about educating our kids.

To the person who asked if I will be teaching and coaching next year. I would love to have the priviledge of teaching and coaching again next year. I do not know whether you think that this is a good thing or a bad thing but I hope to be back next year if the administration will have me. I would love to share my opinions on what needs to be done to elevate Decatur Central High School to the status of an outstanding academic institution. Hopefully there are some people who would like to join in on how we can do this.

O.K. You can walk around and look at maps but no staff or administration will be present. who will be there? The janitors?
Just another example of the cowardice of this admin. and schoolboard. They have turned our lives and our childrens lives upside down and they won't even be there to answer questions? You can't even go into classrooms. They don't care about any of these children. All they care about is taking their big retirements and getting out of town! I don't care who my child goes to school with ,I just want an admin. and schoolboard who really cares about the kids and their lives. Who really cares that they are learning and will be able to get ahead in this world. That they will be able to graduate and be prepared to go to college.

It is to be expected they would all hide out after what they have done to the residents of this township.Trying one learning plan after another... OH, that one didn't work let's try another one because we don't know what the hell we are doing except filling our pockets with the childrens money!

YOU SHOULD ALL HANG YOUR HEAD, STICK YOUR TAILS BETWEEN YOUR LEGS AND GET OUT OF OUR TOWNSHIP AS THE THIEVING COWARDLY DOGS YOU ARE!!!

A commenter at the WKRG.com site in Alabama wrote:

"We know Mr. dePaul will win because Baldwin County cannot afford to pay the enormous salaries the others are now making. I am sure they are going to require at least what they are making now and probably more. Duh!!! No brainer!"

Just a reminder that the quoted salary in their media reports for Stinson is $190,000 not the $250,000 he is paid. Guess at least one person in Alabama thinks Decatur salary is very high.

For those of you feeling a bit defensive living in the townships trailer parks...You've got nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, many of those now pointing their fingers at those living in such a hermitage, once lived in one themselves. It's a psychological thing some pretentious hill-jacks use in an attempt to elevate themselves above others. It's transparent. Frankly, home ownership (especially those nondescript vinyl villages such as Heartland)--just like a lot of things-- are way over rated.

Having said THAT...

Anon:"No doubt this was well planned strategy for the re-election of Collins and Henson. Hope no one "forgets" this example of the board and superintendent's way of working."

Another Anon:"Amazing how all of the imfo on redistricting was suddenly available after elections."

It is amazing. And it worked in 2010.

Has anyone gone on a tour? Who was there to answer questions?

Anonymous said...

Yes we did tour and there was only one other family at the DILC. Very Sad! The lights were not even on. A person in the hall said "I think that thing is next week."
