Resistance And The Environment

We need to elect good, intelligent, thoughtful people to office. How do we get there given the entrenched interests that normally overrule the public interest? What's gone right recently? What's gone wrong recently? How do we improve our government by improving our choices for public office?

Breaking news from Alabama.
The following info was released this morning on www.al.com from Baldwin County schools:
"Roberts confirmed late Wednesday that DePaul had withdrawn from consideration "given the fact there were three finalists, he decided to focus on his current job."
Interviewed Saturday, DePaul said he was considering at least one other job opportunity. He told board members during the interview that the Baldwin County job "appears to be a great opportunity" and would have been a larger district than he currently serves, presenting new challenges.
Board members said they plan to interview the remaining two candidates Monday and Tuesday at the satellite office in Loxley.
The board plans to start the interviews, which are open to the public, at 6 p.m. During the day, the finalists will tour schools and talk to administrators, teachers and staff members, Roberts said.
The board will vote by June 1 to select the superintendent, who will replace Faron Hollinger. JaNay Dawson, who announced plans to retire this year, has served as interim superintendent since Jan. 1. Board members said they plan to visit the current job sites of the candidates before voting to offer the job to one candidate.
Roberts said that the new superintendent should be in office by July."
DePaul is finalist in the New Orlean area for another superintendency - final interview is tonight, May 20.
Stinson now has 50-50 chance of getting the Baldwin County job!
Getting back to the original item on this post. The maps are better than the original ones. They are in .pdf format so that you can zoom in. This was actually done a few days ago.
Were questions about the new boundaries asked? answered?
I know this isn't the subject but can someone help with info please? My daughter is in the New Tech at DCHS. When signing up for school last year, I paid for a yearbook. She informed me that they won't get these until next year!? Before I call the school and hear their excuse, does anyone know what the reasoning is for this? When I was in school we got our yearbooks and passed them around to sign. Are they discouriging this or is it just plain old incompenence?
answer about the year book-- they have always done this in the high school. even when i went 12 yrs ago. who knows their reasoning, but i doubt they will ever change that.
Thank you! :) We're new to the township this year. We relocated from Nashville TN (Fairview) and chose Decatur Township because it was closest to my husbands work at FedEx. We're beginning to think we made a mistake!
anon 11:37 are you on Indy mom like me? your story sounds like 1 in a post about DC last week.
The yearbooks aren't passed out until the fall so that prom, graduation and the end of the spring sports seasons can be included. No incompetence. Just trying to include all activities....
anon 3:30 I sure am. We are so dissapointed in the high school. Our daughter was traumitized enough by the move; she's a junior and always did well in school. We made a move based on a career decision; it was really tough to uproot and start in a new school system for her! We researched mostly west side of Indy; Wayne and Pike along with Decatur. Not only did we not like the neighborhoods but we felt the schools were too "clinical" and a student could get lost. We felt that Decatur township had a "small town" type of charm and the school system was small enough that our daughter would feel at home. It hasn't been the case! I could write a book about how the high school staff has treated us through this transition. We are not comfortable at all with the "small school" format. We feel that this model isn't good for the majority of students. One curious item we noticed is the massive layers of administration at the high school level! Sure you have to follow the "chain of command" but when there are so many "chains" to follow, it takes forever to get anything done, let alone a response! Trust me when I say it's a living nightmare dealing with these people. We found this blog quite by accident and have found it quite interesting. Here's our bottom line. We're between a rock and a hard place now; we'd lose a fortune if we tried to sell our home we bought 14 months ago. Next school year we'll be starting our daughter at Park Tudor for her senior year. Decatur just isn't for us.
Yeah, I agree that the small learning communities within the high school is a bad idea. Many reasons, which include:
1. welcomes too many administrators
2. inefficient
3. does not prepare students for college where traditional lecture format is standard
4. costs more money
5. spreads already scare resources even more thin
6. freshman do not understand how they learn best and so to choose a community so early on is misguided
I could add more, but will stop there.
I'm interested to hear what Pat thinks about this topic.
Plainfiled is not a bad idea either!
Sounds like the indy mom poster is STUCK UP. Get out of Decatur; we don't need you or like you.
I don't think she is stuck-up. I just think she is facing the realities of the Decatur school system
Re to 4:14
Oh yeah? Well YOU have cooties!
Really? Are you kidding with that comment?
IndyMom-its unfortunate that your daughter hasn't had a good experience in Decatur Township. Regardless of the current political and financial situation, many families have had very positive experiences. Best of luck to your daughter embarking on a senior year at Park Tudor.
Anon 6:48...LOL thanks! :)
This is another reason we don't like Decatur. Weird people! LOL! It seems as if everyone knows everyone else; you all went to high school together like 30, 40, even 50 years ago and never left. Not sure what it is; but as soon as we are financially able to we'll be moving.
Thanks again! :)
ANON 11:19
LOL I am with you! After moving here I figured out everyone went to school here and never moved. Therefore since it is the only school they know it is the best school.
Wish I could sell but because of the loss in value in Decatur there is no way! Just hoping before my kids get to old far in this school system I can break even and move!
